Shannon’s OLNM Story

Opportunity Type:
Fellowship

Shannon McGhee, RN

In July 2007, I was fortunate enough to accept a travel assignment to Honolulu for three months. It was probably the most exciting time of my adult life. During my orientation to the hospital I was contracted with, I met a girl named Heather. We hit it off right away. She was funny, fun to be around and it was a first time for both of us to travel. Over the next three months I saw something in Heather that I wanted for myself...Faith Out Loud. She spoke it. She lived it.

October came around and so did the end of my contract there. It was time to go home. As sad as I was to leave, I was excited for what lie ahead for me. I mean, there was no way I could just go back to life the way it was before THAT experience!

The holidays rolled around at home and I was growing increasingly antsy to find the same sort of connection with someone - like I had with Heather in Hawaii. This seemed nearly impossible as I was not really involved in my church and I didn't really know anyone at work or in my personal life (outside of my family) who I could relate to in this way.

But God knew the desires of my heart.

One evening during the Christmas season that year, I was combing through the mail and found a postcard addressed to me. It was from One Love Nursing Ministries. It was an invitation to a Bible Study for nurses! I knew right away that I had to go to this.

Yes, I was scared. I didn't know if I was going to meet a group of boring, judgmental Bible thumpers. Turns out they were just like me! Normal people with stories about family, children, friends, patients, dreams, achievements and even failures. But even more than that, they had a desire to learn more about the Bible and become closer to God.

Over the last 2 years God has blessed me with wonderful Christian friends through One Love Nursing Ministries who love me and continually challenge me to live MY faith out loud.

Thank you Lord for hearing me.
